Scotland. There is no place other than home where I feel more at home. Her rugged beauty speaks to me in a way that Colorado does, but with a rich history and a palpable connection to my families heritage. My maiden name is Frasier, and my bagpipe playing father has proudly traced our roots to near Inverness.
If you are looking for a place that combines stunning countryside with equally amazing city life, Scotland is the place for you.
Our recommended months to visit: AUGUST or DECEMBER. Festival Fringe and the Edinburgh Military Tattoo both happen all month long in August while Hogmanay is a 12/31 New Years Treat!
PLANNING YOUR TRIP TO SCOTLAND
Consider a rental car if opting to travel outside of large cities.
Account for a slower pace of travel due to weather and two lane roads.
If skipping a rental car consider booking a reputable tour company.
Seek out local festivals, highland games, and local music.
Ask local instagramers, B&B owners or guides for their tips!
When booking in a bigger city location is key! Parking near city centers can be tricky.
Know where to book ahead, many destinations will require hotel, or even meal reservations.

Edinburgh
If you are able to tolerate a crowd then August is a great time to visit Edinburgh. The famous Festival Fringe and Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo happen all month long, providing loads of entertainment.

Fort William
This highland town is the gateway to Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the United Kingdom. The views and the whiskey do not disappoint. Harry Potter fans will love the Jacobite Steam Train over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct used during filming the Hogwarts Express scenes.

Inverness & Loch Ness
Our favorite way to view Loch Ness is from a houseboat. You'll have a wonderful view of Urquhart Castle from the water. Inverness provides a wonderful home base for attractions like Culloden Battlefield.

Isle of Skye
Skye's rugged beauty is unrivaled. This is an ideal location for those who enjoy hiking and being outdoors. From the charm of Portree to the Old Man of Storr, and famous Fairy Glen, you are sure to fall for the magic of Skye.

The Royal Mile, Edinburgh
Spanning a two mile distance from end to end this stunning street is bookended by Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood. From historical buildings, shopping, whisky tasting, to ghost tales, and famous pubs there is something for everyone. We recommend staying at the Radisson Blu on the Royal Mile.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo
This is a MUST do every time we are in Edinburgh. Performed right at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle, this spectacle features military bands from across the globe. The main event- the mass pipes and drums! The projections on the castle, coupled with the music will make it a night you'll never forget. The event occurs rain or shine, so be prepared!

The Jacobite Steam Train- AKA The Hogwarts Express
Leaving from Fort William, this train will take you on a journey over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct to Mallaig. We sprung for the first class ticket, which placed us in the "Slytherin" styled car from the films. The ride is very scenic and takes 2 hours each direction with a 1.5 hour stop in Mallaig.

The Royal Yacht Britannia
Located in Edinburgh, this beautiful yacht was used by Queen Elizabeth for 44 years before it was retired. From engines to state rooms, this is a sure win for kids and adults alike.

Loch Ness
Arguably the most famous lake on earth, thanks to the illusive and mysterious Loch Ness Monster, Loch Ness really has something for everyone. There are plenty of boat excursions, the stunning Urquhart Castle, and kids will love the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition to learn the history of the area and Nessie herself.
